Who We Are
Rhode Island People for Animal Welfare Services (RIPAWS) is an all volunteer, non-profit organization whose mission is to save the lives of abandoned, lost and neglected animals and to place them in permanent, loving homes. RIPAWS is not a shelter. Our dogs are boarded at private kennels and our cats are in foster care.
Adopting a friend
Flip through our pet list. Most of the cats and dogs on our site are neutered/spayed and immunized, and tested negative for common diseases.
Some of the dogs have had some obedience training.
Training is always a great way to get the most of your pet/owner relationship.
The Pitbull (AmStaff Tragedy
Racist Mentality Hits the Dog World
Over the past few years, we have seen the pitbull(AmStaff) population increase disproportionately at shelters. This is not a problem for those who work there because they see how wonderful Amstaffs are. But most people who come into shelters have a prejudice against these dogs based solely on what they have seen and read in the media. They judge the entire breed on the actions of a few, just as people judge an entire race based on the actions of a few. This means that the dogs don't get adopted which is tantamount to a death sentence for these poor animals who are victims of a media witchhunt.
The fact is that AmStaffs are among the most social dogs there are. They love being around people. Some of them like other animals, some of them don't. They need a lot of exercise because they are very active dogs. They need structure and stabilty. THEY ARE NOT VICIOUS. In the 10 years I have been working in rescue, I have yet to see a vicious pitbull. They can be trained however, just as many other dogs, to be so. The problem is not the dog, it's the owner of the dog.

Did you know?
Did you know that most of the household cleaning products and cosmetics that you use daily are tested on animals?
Hairspray, hair dye and caustic substances are dropped into the eyes of rabbits, cats and dogs to see how much damage they cause. These procedures are done without the use of anesthesia and then the animals are "sacrificed" when they have served their purpose.
What can you do to help end this cruelty?
Become a cruelty-free shopper. Learn which companies conduct animal testing, such as Proctor & Gamble, and boycott their products. Read labels. Many companies such as Freeman and Tom's of Maine, state on the back label that they are cruelty-free companies; some labels say "no animal testing; no animal ingredients" Lets make animal testing obsolete. Stop buying animal tested products.
Every year, over 3 million cats and 2.5 million dogs in this country are put to death because there are not enough homes for them. Spaying and neutering is the ONLY solution to this needless tragedy.
